Looking ahead with positivity

What allows some people to be optimistic (positive) about the future, and others to be more nervous or anxious about the future?

Scientists think the answer has to do with how people use their memories to think about the future, how they think about problems, and who they have around them for support.

As we’ve discussed in some other blog posts, the brain actually uses the same parts to remember the past and to imagine the future. So, if you can picture something good happening—like getting better at something, meeting a goal, or solving a problem—it’s easier to feel excited about what’s ahead. People who believe they can learn and improve tend to feel more hopeful, even when things are hard. They might remember times when they did something difficult and think, “I can do this again.”

Support from others makes a big difference, too. When friends, family, or teachers believe in you and cheer you on, it’s easier to believe in yourself. Social support can also help you to learn how to regulate your emotions, and social support can even help your brain to develop optimally!
